About the data

“Typical home value” is Zillow’s estimate for homes in the 35th–65th percentile—not a simple average of recent sales. It creates a steadier comparison across places and time. Gas (FRED), CPI (FRED), and the Big Mac Index (The Economist, a McDonald’s proxy) are all live-fetched. In-N-Out, Red Robin, Bruxie’s, movie ticket, and Disneyland ticket prices have no public live feed, so they’re a hand-researched, occasionally-updated dataset rather than a live one — treat those lines as approximate. The page checks the source feeds whenever it loads; release cadence varies from weekly (mortgage, gas) to monthly (home values, CPI) to semi-annual (Big Mac Index).
